STRUCTURE is a monthly structural engineering resource that provides relevant technical and editorial content in its print edition to the 30,000+ members of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, the Structural Engineering Institute and the Coalition of American Structural Engineers. The magazine reaches over 75,000 readers through its digital channels including the digital edition, webinars and email.
Volunteer Structural Engineers comprise the editorial board and collaborate with industry professionals who contribute valuable editorial content. I served as the creative lead in the three-person publishing team.

By 2018, STRUCTURE's logo had begun to feel outdated and the position of the nameplate created a narrow aspect ratio that limited the cover images. Redesigning the logo was the first phase in a multi-part overhaul of the magazine's design style.
After exploring a variety of logotypes we narrowed down to three different options to present to the editorial board. One was a “refresh” of the original logo with a few slight modifications, the second was a more adventurous redesign – a modern font with distinctive custom ligatures. The third was a new, but more conservative option, which became the final logotype.
Stakeholders decided on the "conservative" redesign that used the modulated sans serif, Granville. The strong, yet elegant logotype with tight kerning pairs is evocative of the utilitarian and aesthetic aspects of structures.
